Forced from the throne that she shares with her brother in Tyre, Princess
Dido flees to Cyprus with a group of male supporters. After bringing a group of
Greek women into her fold, she leads her followers to the African coast – where
they build the new city of Carthage. As the city grows and prospers, she reigns
as its queen, achieving new levels of dynamic rule – even as she faces
continuous challenges that could destroy everything that she and her followers
have worked so hard to build.
Dido: Queen of Carthage is a direct refutation of the
traditional myth of Dido created by ancient Roman authors - a myth of a
lovelorn, helpless female - that was heavily reinforced during the Renaissance
by numerous paintings and by other literary works such as Christopher Marlowe's Dido, Queen of Carthage.
Historical drama - full-length
Dido: Queen of Carthage was given a staged reading at the
Playwrights' Center in Minneapolis, MN in 2018.
